At Supplement Result, every review you read is the product of a rigorous, multi-stage process built around one core principle: giving you information you can actually trust. The supplement industry is worth billions of dollars and is crowded with exaggerated claims, paid influencers, and opaque ingredient sourcing. Our job is to cut through that noise with structured, evidence-based evaluation that puts your health outcomes first.
This page explains exactly how we research, test, score, and publish every supplement review on this site — including who makes our decisions, how we handle conflicts of interest, and what happens when the science changes.
Supplement Result reviews are produced through a three-phase process: an in-depth research phase, a structured personal testing period, and a final scored evaluation against five defined criteria. Every product that earns a published review on this site has passed through all three phases. We do not publish reviews based on research alone, and we do not publish reviews based on personal experience alone. Both components are required.
Our review team includes individuals with backgrounds in nutritional science, sports performance, and consumer health writing. Where a review involves a product category requiring specialist knowledge — such as nootropics, hormone-support supplements, or clinical-grade protein formulations — we consult primary research literature and, where appropriate, seek input from qualified registered dietitians or sports nutritionists. Any external expert input is disclosed within the relevant review.
We also maintain a clear distinction between products we have purchased ourselves and products sent to us by brands for review purposes. Both are eligible for review, but the source of each product is always disclosed in the review header. Complimentary products receive no preferential treatment in scoring.
Before a single capsule is opened, our team conducts thorough background research on the product and its ingredient profile. This phase typically takes one to three weeks depending on the complexity of the formulation.
Ingredient Audit: We examine every ingredient listed on the supplement facts panel. For each active ingredient, we review available human clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses to assess whether there is credible evidence supporting the claimed mechanism of action. We specifically look at study quality, sample sizes, dosage ranges used in trials versus dosage in the product, and whether studies were funded by parties with a commercial interest in the outcome.
Dosage Analysis: One of the most common ways supplement brands mislead consumers is by including clinically studied ingredients at doses far below what the research supports. We compare each ingredient's dose against the effective ranges identified in peer-reviewed research. Underdosing is flagged explicitly in our reviews.
Proprietary Blend Assessment: We flag any proprietary blends that obscure individual ingredient quantities. A proprietary blend makes it impossible to verify effective dosing and is treated as a transparency concern in our scoring.
Third-Party Testing Verification: We check whether the product carries certification from recognised independent testing bodies such as NSF International, Informed Sport, USP, or Informed Choice. For products making claims relevant to drug-tested athletes, this is treated as a critical factor. We verify certifications directly through the certifying body's public database where possible — we do not rely solely on claims made on product packaging.
Brand Background Check: We review the brand's history, any FDA warning letters or regulatory actions, customer complaint patterns, and transparency around their manufacturing processes, including whether they use GMP-certified facilities.
Label Accuracy: We cross-reference ingredient names against their INCI or scientific nomenclature to identify cases where brands use less-recognised names for common ingredients that may mislead consumers about what they are actually taking.
Following the research phase, the assigned reviewer uses the product as directed for a minimum testing period. Testing durations are set based on the product category, because different types of supplements operate on different physiological timelines.
During the testing period, reviewers follow the manufacturer's recommended usage instructions including timing, dose, and any dietary guidance provided. Reviewers maintain a structured log covering subjective experience, any side effects, digestive tolerance, energy or performance changes where relevant, and product practicalities such as taste, mixability, and ease of use.
Where a product makes specific performance claims — for example, improvements in strength output, endurance, or measurable body composition — the reviewer uses relevant tracking methods during the testing period. This may include tracking workout performance metrics, using a consistent sleep tracker for sleep aids, or monitoring relevant biomarkers where practical and safe.
We acknowledge that individual responses to supplements vary, and personal experience is one data point among several — not the primary basis for our scores. A product with strong clinical evidence may score well even if a reviewer's personal experience was neutral, and a product with poor evidence will not score well even if a reviewer had a positive subjective experience. Personal testing primarily informs our digestive tolerance, taste and usability, and side effect reporting.
After the testing period concludes, the reviewer compiles all research findings and testing observations into a structured scoring evaluation using our five-criteria framework (detailed below). Scores are reviewed by a second editorial team member before publication to ensure consistency of standards across reviews. Scores that fall within borderline ranges — for example, a score that sits between 3.0 and 3.5 on a given criterion — are discussed between reviewers before finalisation.
The final review is written to present our methodology transparently, explain the reasoning behind each score, and give you everything you need to make an informed decision — whether that means buying the product or looking elsewhere.
Every supplement reviewed on Supplement Result is evaluated against five defined criteria. Each criterion is scored on a scale of 1.0 to 5.0, with increments of 0.5. The five criteria scores are weighted and combined to produce an overall rating out of 5.0. Weighting reflects the relative importance of each factor to the product's actual value to your health and wellbeing.
| Criterion | Weight | What We Evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredient Quality & Evidence | 30% | Clinical backing for each ingredient, bioavailability of ingredient forms used, absence of unnecessary fillers or potentially harmful additives, use of patented and research-validated ingredient forms versus generic alternatives |
| Dosage Accuracy & Transparency | 25% | Whether active ingredients are present at clinically relevant doses, full label transparency with no proprietary blends obscuring key quantities, accurate serving size information |
| Safety & Third-Party Testing | 20% | Independent certification status, absence of banned substances where relevant, known contraindications, side effect profile based on ingredient research and personal testing, GMP manufacturing verification |
| Value for Money | 15% | Cost per serving relative to ingredient quality and dosage, price comparison against comparable products in the same category, availability of subscription discounts or bundle pricing |
| Taste, Usability & Digestive Tolerance | 10% | Flavour and texture where applicable, ease of integration into daily routine, mixability for powder formats, digestive comfort during the testing period, packaging and dosing convenience |
Each criterion score is multiplied by its weighting percentage to produce a weighted sub-score. The five weighted sub-scores are summed to produce the overall rating. For example, a product scoring 4.5 on Ingredient Quality (weighted at 30%) contributes 1.35 to the overall score, while a product scoring 3.0 on Taste and Usability (weighted at 10%) contributes 0.30. The final overall score is rounded to the nearest 0.5 for display purposes, but the precise calculated score is used for comparative rankings and category roundups.
| Overall Score | Rating Label | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 – 5.0 | Outstanding | Exceptional ingredient quality, strong clinical evidence, full transparency, excellent safety profile, and strong value. Represents the best options available in the category. |
| 4.0 – 4.4 | Excellent | High-quality formulation with minor shortcomings. Highly recommended with clear strengths across most criteria. |
| 3.5 – 3.9 | Good | Above-average product with some notable strengths but meaningful gaps in one or more criteria. Worth considering for the right buyer. |
| 3.0 – 3.4 | Average | Meets basic expectations but offers little to distinguish itself. May be adequate for budget-conscious buyers in a low-risk category. |
| 2.0 – 2.9 | Below Average | Significant concerns in one or more areas. Poor dosing, questionable ingredients, or lack of safety transparency. Not recommended without careful consideration. |
| 1.0 – 1.9 | Poor | Substantial evidence of misleading claims, dangerous formulation, or regulatory violations. We strongly advise against purchase. |
Supplement Result earns revenue through affiliate marketing. This means that when you click a link on our site and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the retailer at no additional cost to you. This is how we fund our testing program, pay our writers, and keep this site running without charging you for access to our reviews.
We are transparent about this because we believe you deserve to understand the business model behind any review site you rely on. However, affiliate revenue does not determine what we review, how we score products, or what recommendations we make. Products we earn higher commissions on are not scored more favourably. Products we earn no commission on are eligible for review and subject to exactly the same scoring standards.
Our reviewers are instructed to treat every product as if no affiliate relationship exists. Scores are submitted through our internal scoring system before any commercial considerations are applied to the page, and commercial team members do not have editorial access to change scores before publication.
Where a brand has provided a product for review, sent gifted products, or entered into any sponsored content arrangement with Supplement Result, this is disclosed clearly at the top of the relevant review. Sponsored content, where it exists, is clearly labelled as such and is separated from our organic editorial reviews. Sponsored content does not carry star ratings generated through our standard methodology — any sponsored content is clearly presented as brand-supplied information, not an independent editorial evaluation.
Our reviewers are not permitted to accept personal gifts, hospitality, or financial incentives from supplement brands outside of standard product samples intended for review purposes. Any reviewer who discloses a personal or financial relationship with a brand being reviewed is recused from that review.
The supplement industry changes constantly. Formulations are updated, new research is published, regulatory guidance evolves, and third-party certification statuses change. A review that was accurate at the time of publication may no longer reflect the current product or the current state of the evidence. We take this seriously.
All published supplement reviews are scheduled for a full re-evaluation on an annual basis. During this update review, we reassess the current formulation against our scoring criteria, check for any new clinical evidence relevant to the ingredient profile, verify that third-party certifications remain current, and update value-for-money scoring to reflect any price changes. The date of the most recent review update is displayed at the top of every review page.
In high-priority categories — including products marketed for weight loss, hormone support, or clinical health conditions — we conduct mid-year checks at the six-month mark to identify any significant changes that should trigger an earlier full update.
If we become aware that a product's formulation has materially changed since our review was published — including changes to active ingredient doses, removal or addition of key ingredients, or changes to ingredient forms — we prioritise an immediate review update rather than waiting for the scheduled annual cycle. Until the updated review is published, we add a clearly visible notice to the review page flagging that a formulation update may have occurred and advising readers to verify the current label before purchasing.
We are committed to correcting factual errors promptly and transparently. If you believe a review on Supplement Result contains an error — whether a factual inaccuracy about an ingredient, an incorrect dosage figure, a mischaracterisation of a study's findings, or any other substantive mistake — please contact us through our corrections submission form. We investigate all correction requests and respond within five business days.
Where a correction is warranted, we update the review text, note the correction clearly at the bottom of the review with a description of what was changed and when, and reassess whether the correction affects any scored criteria. If a score changes as a result of a correction, this is documented in the correction notice. We do not silently edit reviews — all material changes are logged and disclosed.
We read every comment and message we receive about our reviews. Reader experiences with products we have covered often provide valuable context that supplements our own testing — particularly for side effects that may emerge across a wider population than our individual testing period can capture, or for formulation changes identified by observant readers who have been using a product long-term. While we cannot incorporate anecdotal reader reports directly into scored criteria, we do take consistent patterns of reader feedback seriously and will
